A Day in the Life of an Intern: Kristyn Story (Spring 2012)

Kristyn Story
Spelman College

I decided to apply for this internship based upon the stellar word-of-mouth reviews from friends and my desire to jump feet first in the public relations industry. Before starting the internship, I thoroughly investigated the blog, website, and facebook and determined I liked the vibe of The Garner Circle PR. Being that this is my first internship in PR I had a few questions: 1) What exactly is PR? Not the Google definition or what I found through online searching but what is PR really? 2) What would be expected of me as an intern? Lastly, what would I be doing day to day…… Million Dollar Question: What does a day in the life of a Junior Publicist look like?

10:00 am: I start my day by getting settled into the office, checking all of the different company email accounts for relevant updates (Rsvps to upcoming events, answering and sending emails), media monitoring to gather information that would be important for The Garner Circle or our clients, and lastly doing product request orders for our Hair Care client Beautiful Textures.

11:00 am: After finishing the morning small tasks listed above, I compiled the lists of media that attended the “Curly Kinky Fly” Natural Hair Meetup Tour in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Once the lists were compiled I emailed all of the media contacts the Beautiful Textures press kit.

11:30 am: At my request, my bosses Nicole Garner and Daniel Dickey decided it would be a good idea for me to tag along on a walk-through so I could learn about how the booking process of an event space should go. At this time, we got ready to go down to Atlantic Station to do a walk through of a venue to be used for our upcoming event Ice Cold Legends with MillerCoors and 100 Black Men.

12:00 pm: We arrived at the Atlantic Station venue for our tour. During the tour, I took pictures to bring back to the office so we could visualize the space and how the space would be used and decorated on the actual night of the event.

1:00 pm: Nicole, Daniel and I finished up the tour of the Venue and headed back to the office to finish up some work.

1:30 pm: Grabbed a quick bite to eat for a little lunch break.

2:00 pm: We arrived back in the office and jumped back into work. I created a document of Media Hits from “Curly Kinky Fly” Natural Hair Meetup Tour.

3:00 pm: I filled in information on our document of Social Media Impressions of Beautiful Textures our Natural Hair Care Client.

4:00 – 5:30 pm: I wrote my “A day in the life of an intern” post for the blog ( what you’re currently reading :-D ).

5:30pm I started on my daily Report and began my wrap up for the day.

6:00 pm: The End of another busy/exciting/productive/fun day as a Junior Publicist at The Garner Circle PR.
